Dorothy Thompson was married to novelist Sinclair Lewis when he wrote the Great American Fascism Novel, IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE, about how an aw shucks politican becomes the American dictator with pretty much the halfhearted consent of the governed. It was a big hit as a novel and a play---the play was produced in dozens of U.S. cities by the Federal Theatre Project.
